Julie Lucas, Hibbing Taconite Company

Julie Lucas graduated from the University of Minnesota – Duluth (UMD) with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and an M.S. in Water Resources Science. She is currently the Environmental Manager at Hibbing Taconite Company, an 8 MLT iron ore mining, beneficiating, and pelletizing facility managed by Cliffs Natural Resources.   

Julie is passionate about educating the community regarding the importance of mining and environmental stewardship.  From 2011 to 2014, she served as the Chair of the Northern MN Subsection of SME, with a focus on public outreach and education. In 2014, she was elected as the 2nd Vice-Chair for the Minnesota SME Section, continuing in her role as the Student Affairs Chair. 

In addition to her roles in SME, Julie is on the Board of Directors for both the Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability and the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota.  Julie is also a Minnesota Master Naturalist and volunteers for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Frog and Toad Survey program and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Citizen Lake Monitoring Program.
